Salvage - armour - Guild Wars Forums

I just got the game, and there is one think i dont understand and thats making armour. When i go to the crafter i have to pay 50g voor leather armour (im ranger)+ some kinda equipment, bu i've no idee were i can find that. If asked around and they say you must use your salvage kit on items and than you get a item that can be used for armour or something like that.
But on what thing i gotta use my salvage kit and is there any list or something where you can see what happens when you use your salvage kit on a item?
